Chapter News

August 29, 2017
Dear CPF Kelowna Members,

Now that the school year is about to start anew, our Board would like to thank each and every one of you for your longtime and wholehearted support. We’d like to fill you in on some of the things that have been happening in our chapter!

As a quickly-growing geographical region, Greater Kelowna is faced with many unique opportunities and challenges, especially as it concerns our school-aged children. In response, as you know, School District 23 recently undertook to reconsider its educational framework. The CPF Kelowna and District Chapter was very proud to be invited to be a part of the recent Task Force for French Immersion, a group of dedicated teachers, educators, and parents who joined forces to reshape the SD23 French Immersion plan. For two years, we met as a committee to discuss the District’s current and future needs, and to determine the best course of action. As a result, the District has opened a new French Immersion program at Dr. Knox, and has plans for significant growth at all scholastic levels for the near future. Having input into these very large decisions is what CPF is all about! It’s amazing to know that SD23 is committed to growing and maintaining an excellent program for our children, going forward.

On a more intimate level, you’ve expressed a desire for strong supplementary French language options in our area. This encouraged us to pursue a variety of high-quality programs to enrich our children’s learning, including our French Stories Nights, featuring French-speaking professionals, and the popular Wilderness Day Camp, that has run for two summers with great success. Several other exciting ideas have also been brought to the table.

For the past 5 years, our Executive Board has worked hard to fulfill our mission and make your membership fees worthwhile! However, we have reached a point where this chapter is ready for a change. We have dedicated countless hours to building strong relationships between Canadian Parents for French and our community and School Board, and we are poised to have a very strong presence in this city. Though our passion for this organization has never waned, the Kelowna and District chapter is ready for new ideas, and new enthusiasm.

We need you!
The chapter Board needs members to step forward and take over.

The current Board is stepping down, and all positions are vacant. This is not a difficult job –it’s one built on passion to ensure our children have the best opportunities! It’s a matter of being creative, social and connected to the community!

This is a wonderful opportunity for all of our members to build on our foundations, and to create something you can be proud of.

Though we are stepping down from governance, the current Executive team is happy to train new Board members (it’s not difficult, we promise!). There are also several opportunities throughout the year to receive innovative online training for all positions from the BC & Yukon Branch office. On September 23/24, they will be conducting training for new chapter Presidents and Vice Presidents.

If we do not fill the positions, alas! Our chapter will close, indefinitely.

On an exciting note, the Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon 2017 regional AGM is going to be held on Sept. 29th and 30th in Kelowna! We are able to send two chapter representatives to participate in this fun and very helpful event. This is an excellent chance to listen, learn, meet people, and to get excited about what CPF can do. A prospective new Board will really be able to find out how CPF works, and to brainstorm some creative ideas with members from across the province (they’re all really nice!). If you think you might be interested in joining the Executive Board, you should really consider taking advantage of this local meeting.

We’ve done some amazing things as a fledgling chapter, let’s keep the momentum going!

Please consider joining the CPF Kelowna and District Executive Board. Your ideas, passion and support are just what we need, and just what all of our kids deserve.

Are you ready? Yes! You are.

Thanks for five amazing years. Here’s hoping for many more!

Redesigning Opportunity for Language Learning in Central Okanagan Public Schools

With more than 2,300 students registered in the French Immersion program this year, and numbers steadily growing, the School District has made a commitment to review the current delivery structure of the French Immersion Program and explore other options in order to design optimal language learning experiences for our students (K-12).

To do this, the Board of Education brought together a Task Force comprised of parents, teachers,
principals, vice-principals, district staff, trustees and community partners to review options to guide future planning. The Task Force met six times during the 2015-2016 school year and were committed to developing a plan that was learner focused – students learning with language
proficiency and cultural understanding – and one that presented inclusive, accessible, flexible, sustainable and well-resourced options for the Board of Education's consideration. As a result,
the Task Force co-designed multiple options which addressed short term needs and long-term
goals. Options were presented to the Board of Education and stakeholders in May of 2016. This
concluded Phase One of the Consultation Process.

The Board of Education is now beginning Phase Two of the Public Consultation Process. Three
Regional Public Consultation meetings will be held to consider the strengths, opportunities and
challenges of the Dr. Knox Middle option and Springvalley Middle option.
Public comment and input will be collected and collated to help inform the Board of Education.
Both options include possibilities for opening additional dual track middle schools, offering second entry points to the Immersion Program (adding middle and/or late immersion to our already established early immersion intake), as well as potentially creating single track French Immersion
elementary schools.

A public survey will also be made available online to collect public comment and input. The Board of Education will consider all evidence and input before making a final decision that best meets the needs of students in the District.
