Program Information

Are you a parent looking for help with your child’s French as a second language (FSL) studies?

Look no further!  CPF has a Virtual Tutoring program to meet your needs.

Who is the program for?

The Canadian Parents for French Virtual Tutoring program was created for parents who made a commitment to have their children learn French. The program provides students from 5 to 14 years of age with additional support for their FSL learning journey.

How does it work?

  • Children spend one hour/week in a one-on-one session with a volunteer French-speaking tutor.
  • The service is offered free or at a very low cost.
  • Sessions take place virtually, so a computer, camera, microphone and internet connection are required.
  • This program is open to CPF members across Canada. There is a $40/child non-refundable registration fee to participate in the program.
  • Full and partial scholarships are available to families who need financial assistance.
  • Please note: A membership is required to register for the tutoring programs. If you do not have up, you may purchase one when you register.

What do students work on?

Tutors come to each lesson prepared with a variety of fun-filled activities that are both engaging and instructional on a specific, interesting topic! Students will work on activities that will focus on reading, writing, speaking, and listening in French. If there is spare time in the one-hour session, students can ask for help on their French homework.

CPF’s free tutoring program is available to all member families, and seeks to support children aged 5-14. The program is run and supported by French-speaking volunteers.

The next session begins in Spring/Summer 2024.

We are always looking for qualified and energetic volunteers to help us with our tutoring program!

Anyone over 14 can apply to be a tutor with CPF, though those under 18 will need a guardian’s permission. All tutors are vetted through an interview process. We ask that volunteers sign up for a minimum of 1-2 hour per week.

The program offers senior high school students an opportunity to build their required volunteer hours while helping other students follow in their bilingual footsteps!

What are the benefits of this program?

The benefits of this program are endless, as it:

  • exposes students to a variety of French accents;
  • offers informal and friendly conversational support;
  • promotes bilingualism among Canadian youth;
  • builds confidence and resilience; and
  • is fun and safe way for your child to improve their French!

FAQ

No. This program is not an academic tutoring program and does not follow a pre-determined curriculum. As a result, we do not provide progress reports for students who are enrolled.

No, not necessarily. The idea is to expose your child to different accents and backgrounds; so typically your child will have a new tutor each week.

No. As we are a 100% volunteer-based program, we cannot guarantee a session every week, but it is our goal to make sure your child has weekly sessions, whether individually or with another student!

There is a limit to three children per family.

We are proud to have a diverse group of French-speaking volunteers, residing in nine provinces and who represent over 16 countries of origin before calling Canada home! CPF tutors are at least 15 years old and fluent in both English and French.

If you’re bilingual or francophone and you’re ready for a meaningful, rewarding experience, we’d love it if you applied! The minimum time commitment is one hour per week. If you want to become a volunteer tutor, you can complete an application form above.
