French and bilingual contests and competitions

Entering contests and competitions in French are great ways for students to express themselves en français, learn something new and have a chance at winning fantastic prizes! Here are a few recent contests that are being offered to students in BC & Yukon and across Canada, including our very own JEUNES ARTISTES creative arts competition!

Hurry, entry deadlines are quickly approaching for several of them! And note that many of the contest websites offer comprehensive bilingual resources so even if the entry deadline has passed students can still learn and have fun while discovering a variety of topics.



Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon

Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon has launched JEUNES ARTISTES! It’s a new bilingual creative arts competition, which gives students the opportunity to demonstrate their bilingual language skills in an open, creative format. This project, built off of the success of CPF’s Concours d’art oratoire, is a great opportunity to engage students in an event focused on creativity and French/English bilingualism. Top 10 winners in Grades 10-12 will be invited to showcase and perform at the Provincial event in Vancouver in March 2016.

Make Your Own Heritage Minute / Minute du patrimoine

Historica Canada

Have you ever wanted to make your own Heritage Minute? Historica Canada is inviting Canadian students and educators to explore the legacy of the Fathers of Confederation and Sir John A., through the creation of their own Heritage Minute-style video. The contest is open to Canadian students in grades 5-12 and grade 5 to secondary V in Québec.

Canada at War: How We Remember  / Comment se souvenir?

Historica Canada

The Canada at War (1914-1919 | 1939-1945) education campaign examines Canada’s participation in the First and Second World Wars with education guides, learning tools and additional activities that complement classroom learning. This contest challenges students to create a piece of writing or artwork around the theme of remembrance of either the First or Second World War. The contest is open to Canadian students in grades 4-12

La Dictée P.G.L. 2016

La Fondation Paul Gérin-Lajoie

La Dictée P.G.L. is a unique and exciting educational project. It is also a fun competition that schools can participate in as well as an international spelling contest. La Grande finale internationale de La Dictée P.G.L. takes place in Montreal in May 2016, following regional events in the months beforehand. Concours national de poésie en immersion française

L’Association canadienne des professeurs d’immersion

Le but de ce concours est de valoriser l’apprentissage du français en immersion et stimuler la poursuite des études collégiales en français. Ce concours fait aussi valoir les qualités d’écriture en invitant le lauréat à lire son poème au cours du FIP ainsi qu’à mettre son poème, pendant une année, sur le site Web du FIP. Le professeur d’immersion du lauréat est offert la gamme complète d’activités reliées à la poésie offertes pendant le FIP. Gagnez une bourse d’études à Trois-Rivières ou un séjour de trois semaines d’immersion française à Trois-Rivières!

National Essay Contest

French for the Future | Le Français pour l’avenir

Ready, set… WRITE! French for the Future’s 11th National Essay Contest has begun! More than $200,000 in scholarships to be won!  Last year’s contest winners included 5 students from BC!

Open to students in grades 10 to 12 across Canada.

2015-2016 Contest Theme: Write a 750 word essay in French starting with “C’est en parlant français que…”

Students – need help writing your essay?
In partnership with French for the Future, Voilà Learning is proud to inform you that all participants to the 2015-2016 National Essay Contest will have the opportunity to benefit from FREE ONLINE HELP. Every day, from October 1st to December 18th 2015, French teachers will be online to help students with the writting of their essay and to answer their questions (how to express their ideas and write good sentences, for example). Students from accross Canada will be able to connect Monday to Thursday, from 5pm to 8pm. A specific virtual classroom will be available for French For the Future’s National Essay Contest.

GALALA amateur talent competition for French-speaking youth

GALALA Season Two is an amateur talent competition for 5 to 15 year olds televised in French across Canada. For a second year, young Francophone or French speaking talent from coast to coast are invited to submit auditions. All forms of artistic expression are welcome – singing, playing an instrument, dancing, slam, theatre, comedy, public speaking, choral singing, martial arts, magic, circus acts and more, in a group or solo – the sky is the limit.

Each episode of GALALA will feature a magnificent part of our beautiful, big country. A regional competition will be held in Surrey, BC on February 22-23, 2016. The 10 regional finalists will meet in Hamilton, ON at the Grand GALALA on March 4-5, 2016.

Concours Immersion clip

L’Association canadienne des professeurs d’immersion

Le concours s’adresse à toi, élève d’immersion française de la 9e à la 12e année (secondaire 3 à 5 au Québec) inscrits à temps plein dans une école secondaire publique ou privée au Canada.

Tu devras créer un vidéo clip en français, d’un minimum de 30 secondes et d’un maximum de 90 secondes portant sur le thème suivant : Les médias sociaux – mon identité virtuelle!

L’identité virtuelle : un sujet vaste et complexe!  Voici quelques pistes pour t’aider à y réfléchir…  Comment ton identité virtuelle est-elle différente de ton  identité réelle?  L’identité virtuelle, quels sont ses avantages et quels sont ses inconvénients? Raconte-nous comment les médias sociaux te font vivre des expériences en français ou comment ceux-ci t’aident à entretenir ton français. Quels sont tes médias sociaux français préférés et pourquoi ? Quels conseils donnerais-tu aux jeunes qui veulent profiter des médias sociaux en français? 

Des bourses à gagner de quatre universités participantes : l’Université d’Ottawa, l’Université Sainte-Anne, l’Université Saint-Paul et l’Université de Sudbury! Des chèques-cadeau à gagner de l’Association canadienne des professeurs d’immersion!

Concours d’art oratoire 2016

Canadian Parents for French

In May every year, Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon Branch hosts the Provincial Concours d’art oratoire. The CPF Concours d’art oratoire offers hundreds of prizes to participants: university scholarships, trips to Ottawa, books, medals, merchandise, cash and more.

Last year, more than 10,000 students in grades six through 12 participated in the Concours in communities throughout BC, almost 300 students participated in the Provincial Concours, and 4 students participated in the National Concours in Ottawa.

Teachers and parents have been organizing Concours for over 25 years, and for many students, it’s now part of the curriculum.
