The National organization of Canadian Parents for French was founded in 1977, and the provincial branch of CPF BC & Yukon was established in 1978 by a devoted group of parents looking to support one another and their children in learning French in the West. The first French immersion program in B.C. began in 1968 in Coquitlam.

Overall enrolment in French immersion programs has grown steadily in B.C. for nearly two decades. Enrolment statistics from August 2019 indicate that 53,955 students in the province were enrolled in French immersion, or 9.49% of the entire student population.
