schoolclosed1Twelve weeks is a long time for students to be away from a classroom.

To provide French opportunities for students during the labour dispute, many French Immersion and Core French parents are searching for extra-curricular activities, day camps, tutors, and resources, en français.

As of the 2012/20113 school year, 47,857 students were enrolled in French immersion programs in BC, accounting for 8.5% of the total public school student population. In addition, 187,964 students were participating in the Core French program, making up almost one third (32.5%) of all public school students.

To help connect these families to emerging activities and resources Canadian Parents for French BC & Yukon has launched a resource for BC families, & a crowd-sourcing tool for educators, partners, and stake-holders.

*Alliance Française de Vancouver is preparing to host Strike Camps for youth, en français.

  • Should the school strike continue, the Alliance Française de Vancouver will offer French activities, crafts and games, organized and supervised by a qualified French teacher, every strike day from 8:30am to 3:30pm from September 2.

*Stewart College French Strike Camp (Victoria)

  • Taught by Francophone and/or French language teachers, this camp aims to revive student revive student fluency in French and build their vocabulary in preparation for their return to school.
  • Students will enjoy French conversation activities including board games, movies and media, language activities, sports and out-trips downtown.
  • Start Date: Tuesday September 2nd, 2014*
  • Schedule: 9 am to 3 pm, weekdays, including a one hour supervised lunch period.
  • Price: $40/day or $180/week (5 days).
  • Ages: 10 – 13 years old (Going into Grades 5 through 7 when school resumes). Language level: Students must have attended a Francophone school OR an Early French Immersion program in the prior school year. No exceptions.

*French Strike Day Camp – Association des Francophones des Kootenays Ouest (Nelson)

  • Starting date: Wednesday Sept. 3rd. (5 to 12 yrs).
  • Tuesday to Friday. Drop-off:  8:30am – 9:00am. Pick-up:  4:30pm – 5pm. 723, Ward St, Unit 210
  • Per person/per day: $30. Places limited

*Le Centre Culturel — French Day Camp (Vancouver)

  • Le Centre has set up temporary service of educational activities for children aged 6 to 12 years in case of strikes in schools.
  • Given its capacity and recruitment of qualified personnel that we have achieved in the last few days, the Centre will offer 10 places Monday to Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm, and 10 additional places Tuesday and Fridays.
  • Prices:
    Members: 40$/day or 200$/week
    Non-members: 45$/day or 225$/week

*FALY ACADEMY Strike French Soccer Day Camps (North Vancouver)

  • Faly academy soccer is now taking pre-registrations for Strike Day Camp(s). If you know you are going to need camp on the day of a teacher strike, please register now. Then, if we face a strike day, you can drop your kids off at William Griffin turf (851 W. Queens Road North Vancouver) Faly Academy soccer camp those days.

  • For ages 6 – 10 years of age, the Burnaby Village Museum has crafts, activities, games and exploring from 9-3 p.m. with after-care available until 4 p.m. for an extra $11/day.

*Fall Nature Camp Burnaby Lake Regional Park

  • For students in grades 1 – 4 from Sept. 2 – 5. The camp will consist of four days of hikes crafts, games and nature exploration. Each day will have its own theme related to nature and recreation in the outdoors. The program will be cancelled if schools are back in session.

*School Strike Camp – Let us entertain your kids with our amazing Bricks 4 Kidz robotics classes using Lego bricks. Children will learn all about engineering and architecture while building different types of models and watching them come to life. 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. $45 per child. To register visit us online.

*Day of Arts

  • Runs 8:45 a.m. – 2:45 p.m. with optional after-hours care available until 4;30 p.m. for a nominal fee. Students in Grades K to 5 can choose from fantastic art, drama and music activities.

*Keats Camps – is offering strike camps for 7 to 13 year olds on Keats Island in Howe Sound. For more information head to their website.


*Incredible Athlete will be running extended day camps during the school strike.

  • The camps will be filled with volleyball activities, arts and crafts, outdoor play and possibly some theme days.
  • Regular hours will be from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. with extended hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Cost is $150/week for regular hours and $180/week for extended hours.

*Neighborhood Art Studios will hold special classes for children 8 to 12 years old, and a special class for teens.

  • The classes will run Monday thru Friday, 9am – 3pm. Guardians supply the daily lunch, and they will supply all the art materials.
  • The cost is $50/day, or $200 for a five day week. The classes consist of classical drawing and painting lessons for beginners and intermediates.

Maple Ridge

*Ridge Wilderness Adventures – are offering Fall Day Camps at Rocky Point and Whonnock Lake starting Sept. 3, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m.

*Vancouver Aquarium is offering aquatic conservation day programs for grades K through 12 starting on Sept. 2. Children will connect with aquatic animals and learn about marine life.
