It is said that one of our biggest fears is public speaking. And what’s the best way to get over our fears and become more resilient and confident? By facing them head-on!

Our longstanding public-speaking Concours d’art oratoire provincial finals will be held on May 4th, 2024, at Simon Fraser University, Surrey Campus. The competition is open to youth from grades 6 to 12 who are learning French in school. It is a great way to celebrate our participants’ many hours of hard work and official language bilingualism in Canada!

Over 150 students participated in the provincial finals of the Concours d’art oratoire 2023. Five BC students from Grades 11 and 12 had the opportunity to participate later in the National competition, where three of them placed first in their respective categories.

We are so proud of all our Concours participants. It is a big win to compete and be able to speak in front of people. We strongly encourage all eligible students to keep up the great work and consider  joining us at the 2024 Concours d’art oratoire. We are so excited to see all that you achieve!

What you need to know about Concours d'art oratoire.

Concours d’art oratoire is a  longstanding public speaking competition for youth who are learning French in school hosted by Canadian Parents for French. It’s a great way to honor their many hours of hard work and to celebrate official language bilingualism in Canada. The contest is open to students in every province and territory and in a wide range of age/grade categories and French abilities. Thousands of students participate every year in communities big and small, for the opportunity to win prizes or scholarships to postsecondary institutions.

The Concours d’art oratoire has proven to be highly beneficial for students as it:

  • stimulates their interest in learning French;
  • improves their speaking and pronunciation skills;
  • offers them the experience of speaking French in public;
  • provides an opportunity to foster a community of active French language learners; and
  • demonstrates the relevance of French language instruction in the ‘real world.’

First, students must prepare their speech presentations. These presentations will then be judged within their own province/territory.

Grade 11 & 12 students who place 1st in each of the categories will move on to the Virtual National finals.

Students advancing to the Virtual National Final competition may submit a recorded video of their speech for submission.

Registration deadline for the provincial Concours d’art oratoire is April 12, 2024.

The provincial Concours will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024.

Students from BC and the Yukon compete within pre-determined categories:

  • Core French
  • Intensive/Extended French
  • Early and Late Immersion
  • Francophone

Please note: the appropriate category in which the student competes is not necessarily the program they are enrolled in at school, as previous French experiences (e.g., exchange programs, etc.) are also taken into consideration. It is crucial to be consistent with the Category Criteria, as failure to do so may result in disqualification at the Provincial and National CPF Concours d’art oratoire levels.

The CPF BC & Yukon Branch registration deadline has passed.

The competition will be held on May 4, 2024. Check back for updates from your CPF Branch as registration processes and timelines vary.

Grades 6 to 10 – 1st $75, 2nd $50 and 3rd $25
